Next-Generation Polar Research Workshop

The Next Generation Polar Research (NGPR) Symposium will catalyze formation of a vibrant, international and interdisciplinary community of polar researchers working collectively to extend polar research frontiers across the natural and social sciences and communicate their research to non-specialist audiences. The symposium will provide a venue where newly minted Ph.D. graduates can learn from each other and from veteran polar scientists who took part in the 1957/58 International Geophysical Year; share ideas and techniques for educational outreach; expand their historical, scientific and professional outlook; and forge lifelong, interdisciplinary collegial relationships with their peers.

Myelin 2008

Our understanding of the biology of myelinating cells in the nervous system continues to expand rapidly. Since the last meeting in Ventura, CA, USA in 2006 there has been a significant move towards utilizing the insights gained from the basic biology of myelinating cells in the development and understanding of the potential for myelin repair in the adult CNS and PNS. The realization that the adult nervous system contains populations of stem cells and neural precursors capable of generating new myelin has propelled studies on the genesis and differentiation of myelinating cells to the forefront of biomedical research. The program for the 9th Gordon Conference on Myelin "Development and Diseases of Myelin" is designed to capitalize on these advances and further accelerate research in this area. We will make a concerted effort to invite investigators at the junior faculty level to be speakers at this meeting. The more senior investigators have been encouraged to act as session chairs and provide overviews of the field. This will allow young investigators a unique opportunity to present their work, and become known to their scientific peers. Few other venues offer such an opportunity. Appropriate attention will be paid to ensure gender balance in the roster of speakers. We are also committed to fostering trainees in the field of myelin biology and to specifically encourage their participation we will offer stipends for travel and registration as funds permit. All attendees will be expected to contribute to an oral presentation or present a poster. We believe that poster sessions are a key element in fostering productive interactions between scientists with different expertise. In keeping with the goals of the Gordon Conference such interactions will provide impetus and direction to the field of myelin biology.

4th International Conference on Web Information Systems and Technologies

The purpose of the 4th International Conference on Web Information Systems and Technologies (WEBIST) is to bring together researchers, engineers and practitioners interested in the technological advances and business applications of web-based information systems. The conference has four main track, covering different aspects of Web Information Systems, including Internet Technology, Web Interfaces and Applications, Society, e-Communities, e-Business and, last but not least, e-Learning.

WEBIST focuses on real world applications; therefore authors should highlight the benefits of Web Information Systems and Technologies for industry and services, in addition to academic applications. Ideas on how to solve business problems, using web based information systems and technologies, will arise from the conference. Papers describing advanced prototypes, systems, tools and techniques and general survey papers indicating future directions are also encouraged. Both technological and social-oriented papers are accepted. All papers must describe original work, not previously published or submitted to another conference. Accepted papers, presented at the conference by one of the authors, will be published in the Proceedings of WEBIST. Acceptance will be based on quality, relevance and originality. Both full research reports and work-in-progress reports are welcome. There will be both oral and poster sessions.

Saudi Healthcare (SHASH)

The Saudi economy is strengthened by the record high oil prices, and the health sector is particularly benefiting from this with the Government allocation of SR31 billion (US$8.27 billion) for health and social services in the Kingdom in its 2006 budget. This is an increase of around 30% on 2005, and the healthcare sector will receive the second, previously third, largest share of the budget. With oil prices remaining high, a growing population and an overall buoyant economy, the 2007 budget is expected to see a similar increase.

Saudi Arabia is the largest market for medical equipment and healthcare products in the Gulf, and the Ministry of Health is the largest buyer representing around 60% of the market for such products. The Kingdom is also the largest market in the Middle East for pharmaceuticals, with over 65% of all Gulf Region sales, importing 90% of its requirements valued at US$1.2 billion in 2005. With a growing population, from the present 26 million to a forecast 47 million by 2020, the importance of the Kingdom as the market in the Region is set to continue well into the century.

New-Generation Polar Research Symposium
