Improving Drug Development Using Patient Adherence Data in Clinical Trials
May 6, 2008 - May 7, 2008,
Washington Center, University of California Washington, Distr. Columbia United States

Data from trials and practice show that ambulatory patients frequently underdose, either by: never starting dosing, omitting scheduled doses, or premature cessation of dosing. Routine methods fail to detect most of these errors. Yet variable dosing histories are a major source of variance in drug response, confounding the estimation and interpretation of all dose/time-dependent trial outcomes, eg, PK parameters, dose-dependent efficacy, regimen definition, dose-dependent toxicity. Fully analyzed dosing histories can substantially upgrade learning from all trials.

FEATURED TOPICS

· Documenting and managing adherence in clinical trials
· Methods of compiling and assessing drug dosing histories
· Adherence-informed pharmacometric analysis of effectiveness
· Safety
· Dosage-regimen optimization
· Regulatory issues
· Labeling
· Statistical considerations

Brain Pacemakers
May 6, 2008 - May 6, 2008,
Health and Human Services Hubert H. Humphrey Building, Washington, Distr. Columbia United States

Deep brain stimulation (DBS) or brain pacemaker technology is an area of rapid growth in medicine with enormous potential for treating various chronic and disabling neurological disorders.

There have been over 40,000 DBS implants worldwide. Currently, the FDA approves DBS in the US for the treatment of movement disorders such as Parkinson disease, essential tremor, and dystonia. In the past decade, the scientific literature has demonstrated the long-term safety and benefit of DBS in the treatment of patients with movement disorders.

In addition, the use of DBS for treating other neurological and neuropsychiatric disorders is currently being explored through various investigational clinical trials. Promising data are emerging regarding the benefit of DBS in the treatment of patients with obsessive compulsive disorder, depression, epilepsy, and traumatic brain injury.

The positive impact of DBS in Americans with neurological disorders and disability cannot be understated. For many patients, DBS therapy is life altering and various studies clearly indicate profound improvements in quality of life for patients who have exhausted most, if not all, other treatment options. This innovative approach also brings forth ethical challenges that need to be considered. In this symposium, we will review the current indications for DBS and its multifaceted impact on patient’s lives, and will explore emerging applications for clinical practice and the future direction of the field.

The program will include prominent guests and leading faculty representing clinicians, neuroscientists, patients, patient advocacy groups, and representatives from various government agencies.

Fermentation Methods and Scale-up Strategies
May 6, 2008 - May 9, 2008,
Forest Resources Laboratory at Penn State's University Park Campus State College, Pennsylvania United States

This course emphasizes the theoretical and practical aspects of laboratory microbial fermentation and scale-up. Participants will get hands-on experience setting up and monitoring fermentors, as well as conducting practical experiments that include the effects of medium components on cell density, mixing, aeration, and oxygen mass transfer in fermentation systems, analysis and control of key parameters for product optimization, and computer control of fermentation. The laboratory work will be supported by presentations and discussions on the fundamentals of microbial culture, aseptic techniques, kinetics of fermentation, recombinant microorganisms, scale-up strategies, downstream processing, economic considerations, regulatory aspects, and cGMP.

Approximately 70% of the time is spent in lecture and 30% is in the laboratory.

Imaging and Clinical Trials 2008
May 6, 2008 - May 7, 2008,
Hyatt Regency Cambridge, Cambridge, Massachusetts United States

Radiographic imaging is playing a much larger role than ever before in the diagnosis of disease and evaluation of new drug candidates. With technology evolving so rapidly, many in clinical development are not sure which techniques are available to them, whether they can be implemented into a clinical development program and how to implement them. This conference will provide you with solutions to these issues.

Conference Coverage Includes:

*Imaging in diagnosis and drug development, the big picture
o Patient selection
o Proof of principle, biologic activity
o Optimization of dose and schedule
o Surrogate marker for clinical outcome parameter
o Safety assessment
* Selection and application of various imaging tools
* Challenges in design & analysis of clinical trials to assess diagnostic imaging tools and radiographic endpoints in drug efficacy evaluations
* Partnering with Imaging Service Providers
* Quality control and data management of imaging data
* Application of imaging tools in oncology, CNS, and cardiovascular clinical development programs
