BodyNets '07
May 14, 2008 - May 16, 2008,
Florence Italy

With recent advances in Wireless Sensor Networks (WSNs), their practical applications in general sensing and monitoring are rapidly broadening. Although originally conceived for wide area environment or process monitoring, WSNs are increasingly being used in biological and healthcare applications. These applications involve the networking of sensors around and/or inside the human body, thus allowing novel interaction paradigms that impact many aspects of daily life, ranging from healthcare or home monitoring to the realization of smart spaces (vehicles, home, office, etc.) in which people have access to information and actions in a virtually transparent way.
Despite the recent technological developments in the fields of sensing (both medical and other types), embedded electronics, and sensor networking, several challenging issues need to be addressed. In particular, technological scaling, wireless communication and networking, sensor data processing and presentation are the key aspects that need to be investigated in an integrated fashion for enabling visionary applications in the area of body area sensor networks.
The aim of this conference is to develop common design guidelines for the field of body sensor networks by bridging the gap between the fields of electronics and telecommunications, computing, bioengineering and applied sciences (medicine) and sensor networking.

BodyNets 07 will thus offer a unique forum for researchers from academia, government and industry to share ideas and disseminate new results in these important areas.

Integrative Physiology
May 14, 2008 - May 16, 2008,
The New York Academy of Sciences New York, New York United States

Scientists have recently made enormous strides toward elucidating the multiple functions of genes in adult animals. Remarkably, this has revealed unanticipated connections between organs. This progress allows us to now ask much broader questions related to the physiology of organisms and to analyze its impact on the molecular pathogenesis of degenerative diseases.

At this meeting, presentations by top researchers will summarize where the field of integrative physiology is and how we can move the field forward.

This 2.5-day conference has been designed to explore the genetic basis of the known functions of many organs, the identification of novel physiological functions for various organs and the definition of genetic cascades leading to frequent degenerative diseases such as metabolic syndrome, heart failure and osteoporosis.

4th International Symposium on Flood Defence
May 14, 2008 - May 16, 2008,
Westin Harbour Castle, Toronto, Ontario Canada

Floods, including flash and riverine floods, snowmelt floods, ice jams, and mud flows, are naturally occurring hazards that provide essential elements to the bio-diversity and sustainability of ecosystems and many human activities. Floods are also the most taxing type of water-related natural disasters to humans, material assets, as well as to cultural and ecological resources—affecting about 520 million people and their livelihoods and claiming about 25,000 lives annually worldwide. The annual cost to the world economy of floods and other water-related disasters exceeds $60 billion, whilst the cost of damage caused to cultural assets and natural resources is by no means quantifiable by economic scales.

10th International Conference on Pressure Surges
May 14, 2008 - May 16, 2008,
Roxburghe Hotel, Edinburgh, Scotland United Kingdom

The components of a good hydraulic design require anticipating transient responses. Therefore the design must use the best available simulation techniques and build into the solution, quality, efficient monitoring and proven controlling procedures.

Predicting surge analysis can often be difficult, involving detailed computer modelling in attempts to simulate the complex interactions of equipment, pipelines and fluids during normal, fault and emergency events. Whilst issues of pump and pipe sizing are important, the interactions between system components can frequently be more challenging to a hydraulic designer.

China Water Congress 2008
May 14, 2008 - May 16, 2008,
Kempinski Hotel Beijing Lufthansa Center, Beijing, Beijing (munic.) China

Due to demographic development of 1.6 billion by 2030 and industrialization and urbanization drive which will last at least for three decades, China encounters overwhelming unbalance between demand and supply in water resources. To resolve this shortage, total investment needs for water sector in China during 2006-2010 are estimated to reach RMB 1000 billion, within which the number for sewage disposal & recycling and water quality improvement, supply security & desalination will respectively be over RMB 330 billion and 300 billion. According to the 11th five-year plan, sewage disposal ratio for Chinese cities by 2010 is set to reach 60%, with the number for major cities up to 80%. Besides, thanks to the encouragement of private participation in China's water sector from water authorities, the average annual number of water company privatization projects in China has increased from 2 in year 2002 & 2003 to 8 in 2004 – 2006 year, and the number is still considerably on a rise. What are the implications of these numbers, and how will they impact China, and world, and your business?

With key international players pouring into China market and growing privatization of water supply facilities, industrial integration will be substantially accelerated and shape the future of China's water sector. However, how to manage financial risks in investment and expansion is becoming a rising concern. Meanwhile, thanks to the diversity in investors, China will soon witness increasingly multiple models in financing options and channels. Therefore generally, China's water industry development is stepping onto a crucial stage and multi-national and domestic players' strategic planning will fundamentally transform the landscape of the market.

16th International Conference on Health Promoting Hospitals and Health Services (HPH)
    May 14, 2008 - May 16, 2008,
Langenbeck-Vinchow-Haus, Luisenstraße 58/59, Berlin, Berlin Germany

Health has been gaining a key role in most developed countries over the last years – a phenomenon framed as the “health society” by Ilona Kickbusch, doyenne of the health promotion movement, and others. There is mounting evidence justifying such a description: Mass media coverage and communication about health have significantly risen over the past decades, covering not only medicine and health care in general, but also prevention, positive health, fitness, wellness and health promotion, allowing for a wide access to health related information. Together with the demographic and epidemiological developments towards longevity and chronic diseases, this results in an increased relevance of maintaining and improving health in daily life – which becomes visible in lifestyle and shopping choices, in the utilisation of wellness resorts and health services. The so-called first and second health markets are booming, so that health is increasingly becoming a driving force for economic growth, by some seen as the 6 th Kondratieff cycle. On a political level, these developments are mirrored by the emergence of a broader approach towards health: “Health in all policies” is high on the European agenda since the Finnish EU presidency in 2006.

    May 14, 2008 - May 16, 2008,
Kielce Trade Fairs, 1Zakładowa Str., Kielce, Poland

The idea of organizing such a fair has resulted, among other things, from the fact that the state of transport infrastructure is one of the most important criteria for the evaluation of the social and economic development of a country, in addition to largely contributing to its economic growth. Today, Poland's road infrastructure is not sufficiently developed. The poor condition of the domestic transport infrastructure, which results from inadequate investments in this sector, is a burden on the national economy, hindering its competitiveness and economic growth. Poland's network of national roads exceeds 18,000 kilometres, with 550 kilometres of motorways and 230 kilometres of expressways. A motorway development programme is being implemented, as a result of which the total length of motorways to be constructed in Poland by 2013 will amount to more than 2000 kilometres.

TRAFFIC-EXPO will be held simultaneously with the 14th International Fair of Road Construction AUTOSTRADA-POLSKA, the 10th International Construction Equipment and Special Vehicles Fair MASZBUD, and the 2nd Airport Technologies and Infrastructure Exhibition TIL. Last year, these fairs attracted 753 exhibitors from 23 countries. During the three days, the exhibitions were visited by 15,000 people.
