- War, Empire and Slavery c. 1790-1820 Conference
-
May 16, 2008 - May 18, 2008,
University of York, York, England, United KingdomThese wars saw the fatal weakening of the Dutch and the Spanish, and eventually the French empires, yet the continuing expansion of the British, Russian and North American empires. The impact of the warfare of the period can only be fully understood if this global dimension is given full weight, and if the experience of these wars is placed in the context of the parallel developments taking place in the political, military and economic systems of Asia and Africa, in the Mogul, Persian, Ottoman and other empires.

- Economic Incentives: Do They Work in Education? Insights and Findings from Behavioral Research
-
May 16, 2008 - May 17, 2008,
Munich, Bayern GermanyBuilding on the success of a previous joint conference whose proceedings are just published by MIT Press, the scientific organizers, Paul E. Peterson (Harvard) and Ludger Woessmann (Munich), hope to again bring scholarly perspectives together from both sides of the Atlantic. Jean-Jacques Rousseau once claimed that the best education was one that the child discerned for himself. The tutor was to “do nothing and let nothing be done” so that the child would be free to learn whatever he needed to know without external pressure. When it comes to learning, incentives – whether cash or compli¬ments – had perverse consequences. Was Rousseau correct? Do incentives operate differently in education than in other sectors of society? What kinds of incentives prompt learning? Which ones deter it? Do students respond to economic rewards? Do teachers respond to material rewards for meritorious accomplishments? Or do they regard them as demeaning? Are extrinsic incentives preferable to intrinsic ones, monetary incentives to non-monetary ones? If schools face competition for students, do they become more efficient? Answers to many education policy issues – merit pay, graduation requirements, social promotion policies, school choice options, school accountability provisions, and many others – depend on how incentives work in education.

- War, Empire and Slavery c. 1790-1820
-
May 16, 2008 - May 18, 2008,
University of York, York, England United KingdomThe revolutionary and Napoleonic wars are frequently interpreted as a European phenomenon, intertwined with political and cultural nation-building across Europe. Yet they could also be called the first world war, as one which touched every continent of the globe. This conference aims to attract scholars from different disciplinary backgrounds as well as those with specialised knowledge of different geographical areas. Charting the experiences of the men and women engaged in the conflicts requires not only discussion of the conventional sources of military and political history, but critical examination of personal and autobiographical writings and their cultural and imaginative contexts.

- Gender and Modernity in Central Europe
-
May 16, 2008 - May 18, 2008,
University of Ottawa Ottawa, Ontario CanadaSince the Austro-Hungarian Monarchy’s dissolution in 1918, its memory and legacy have been, by turns, suppressed, contested, and continuously re-evaluated in the countries emerging in its wake. The fall of Communism in 1989,followed by the gradual integration of the region into the European Union has prompted a resurgence of interest in the Monarchy’s impact on the political, social, and cultural fabric of the countries of Central and East-Central Europe. It has also led to the rediscovery – and in many cases restoration – of its rich heritage of urban and cultural modernization and the rebuilding of the once-existing ties between institutions, communities and individuals across borders, a process sometimes coloured by nostalgia or tainted by resurgent nationalisms and political considerations. This conference aims to make a contribution to the field of Habsburg studies by exploring the complex connections between modernity and gender while also raising awareness of the field’s importance in Canada.

May 16, 2008 - May 19, 2008,
Chellah Hotel, Tangier MoroccoThe fourth international Tangier conference will focus on the city as a site of transcultural encounters in art, literature, music, and politics in all periods up through the present and projecting into the future. We especially invite papers and panels to investigate the dynamics of the city’s cultural, spatial, and performative interactions, past, present, and future, including issues of change, confrontation, and alterity.
We also invite a continuation of panels and discussions begun in previous conferences—following the methods and techniques of Juan Goytisolo as well as Andrew Hussey’s creative deconstruction of the urban morphology of Paris—of how Tangier might be re-invented as one of the World capitals of the twenty-first century.
In broad historical terms we invite continuing evaluation of specific writers and artists who have come to or out of Tangier, from Tahar Ben Jelloun, Mohamed Choukri, Mohammed Azeddine Tazi, Ahmed Beroho, Souad Bahechar, Moumen Smihi, Farida Benlyazid, Anouar Majid, Jillali Farhati, Zobeir Ben Bouchta, to Mohammed Mrabet and including the oral tradition some of whose storytellers and artists who were translated by Paul Bowles, as well as modernist painters like Matisse, existentialist writers such as Bowles, dramatists of various stripes such as Jean Genet and the brilliant minimalist Samuel Beckett, “Beats” such as Jack Kerouac, William S. Burroughs, Allen Ginsburg, and others, as well as more general movements associated with the various African, Andalusian or Islamic influences on western music in general and more particularly on American jazz and blues like the outstanding collaborations of Dar Gnawa in Tangier with Jazz legend Randy Weston. - Infection prevention in hospitals
-
May 16, 2008 - May 16, 2008,
BioPark Hertfordshire, Broadwater Road Welwyn Garden City, England, United KingdomNosocomial infections or hospital/healthcare acquired infections are often acquired as a result of treatment in hospital or a healthcare unit. The most common nosocomial infection is MRSA, which often makes an appearance on headline news.
HCAI have a huge impact and concern to the healthcare service and patients. The emergence of multi-drug resistant infections presents an increasing global threat for successful treatment of patients and prevention of cross infections in the hospital environment and other healthcare establishments as well as in the community.
The main cause of the problem has been linked to the inappropriate usage and over subscribing of antibiotics which has led to the need for increased education of both the public and professionals on the correct use of antibiotics as well as stringent infection control measures to reduce the transmission of infections.
The Department of Health has set out a strategy called “Towards cleaner hospitals and lower rates of infection programme” to improve hospital cleanliness and tackle healthcare associated infections. Key elements include empowering patients and the public, the matron's charter, independent inspection and learning from the best.
In this forum infection prevention, control and research into this within hospitals will be discussed. Dr Raj Pnaiser BSc (Hons) FIBMS PhD (Meeting Chair)

- Russia Business Roundtable - Tokyo
-
May 16, 2008 - May 16, 2008,
Tokyo JapanHow times have changed. A decade ago it was emerging market turmoil which threatened the major economies—now it is emerging markets riding to the rescue as sub-prime woes threaten Europe and North America. On a business level, sluggish major markets are being eclipsed by opportunities in emerging economies such as Russia.
This is particularly true for Japanese companies. With growth prospects at home looking uninspiring, Japanese companies are realizing that long-term success will need to be earned abroad. Globalisation is increasing the pressure on Japan to optimise production, supply-chain and R&D capabilities in order to avoid being squeezed between new lower-cost competitors and the owners of intellectual property for product design and development. Tapping the potential of emerging markets such as Russia will be key for Japanese companies to thrive amid the ever intensifying global competition. - full details

- 22nd Annual Conference on Audiovisual Law

Palais des Festivals et des Congrès de Cannes, Cannes, Provence Cote dAzur FranceThis conference is a must for anyone involved in the film industry who wishes to keep up to date with the latest business, legal and technical knowledge regarding right clearances.
Getting a film ‘cleared' may seem a titanic task. This has however become a necessary step to ensure protection when the financial and legal liability of audiovisual professionals is involved. The rise of the internet and VoD has meant that rights clearance has turned into an expensive and complex process for the film industry. When the price of non-compliance may prove to be non-distribution, all the stakeholders, insurers, programmers, distributors, film-makers and co-producers agree that rights clearance must be a priority. - full details

- Cryopreservation Of Ovarian Tissue In Cancer Patients, Farm Animals And Endangered Species
-
May 16, 2008 - May 17, 2008,
Heidelberg GermanyFertility preservation in women and cancer patients and preservation of gametes of farm animals or endangered wildlife species are topics of increasing scientific and public interest. Both topics involve cryopreservation of ovarian tissue, followed by tissue re- or xenotransplantation or/and by production of mature oocytes in vitro. As these techniques are highly complex, their efficacy is still very limited. Substantial progress in this field will depend on the successful and not yet performed integration of the different involved researchers from all areas of human reproductive medicine, veterinary medicine and biology.
