International Seminar on The Emergence of Social Differences in Mortality: Time Trends, Causes, and Reactions
May 29, 2008 - May 30, 2008,
Alghero Italy

In this seminar we intend to add to the knowledge of the causes of the long-term trends in social inequality in adult mortality by studying data for a variety of settings and regions for which we have data by social class over a considerable amount of time. By analysing mortality for men and women separately we are able to find out whether the relationship between mortality, social class and gender has changed over time. A central issue will be the question whether locality or social class were the main factors determining group differences in mortality (social context). We are particularly interested in the mechanisms between socioeconomic position and mortality, i.e. whether the gradient is due to income and wealth, housing, education, etc.

These markets, which serve as channels for the execution and transmission of monetary policy and as trading venues for the shortest-term instruments, anchor the entire term structure of interest rates. Money markets are central to the allocation of capital, the efficient distribution of liquidity among financial institutions, and the hedging of short-term risks. The markets also play an important role in the credit evaluation process and in the the large-value payments systems where trades are settled.

Cellular Responses to DNA Damage 2008
May 29, 2008 - May 29, 2008,
Best Western: Inn at Longwood Medical 342 Longwood Avenue Boston, Massachusetts United States

The 2008 "Cellular Responses to DNA Damage" Symposium will explore the links between chromatin dynamics, histone modification and the repair of DNA double strand breaks. The compact nature of chromatin presents a significant barrier to DNA-dependent transactions, including gene transcription and DNA replication. Access to specific regions of chromatin is regulated at multiple levels, including remodeling of chromatin structure, local deposition of specific histone variants, post-translational modification of histones and the recruitment of specific proteins to these modified histones. The ability of cells to detect and repair DNA double strand breaks appears to be dependent on many of these same regulatory processes. By bringing together a diverse array of experts from the fields of chromatin structure, histone modification, chromatin remodeling and DNA double-strand break repair, this symposium aims to highlight the critical role of histones and chromatin structure in the detection and repair of DNA double strand breaks.

Asia CEO Agenda 2008

ontinued global economic growth: the spotlight is on Asia

Despite an economic slowdown in the US, the world economy is set to expand by an annual average rate of 4.7% in 2007-08. Although this is slower than the buoyant pace of growth in 2004-06, it marks one of the better performances in recent decades. This reflects the increasing weight in the world economy of dynamic emerging markets, China and India, in particular, whom are helping to lift the global economy as they continue to expand rapidly. Undoubtedly, this puts Asia-Pacific firmly in the spotlight as the engine for global growth. MNC's and local companies in the region are uniquely poised to capitalise on this growth. Emerging markets continue their colossal growth rate and the scramble for market share at any cost as seen in some cases is starting to recede. Instead, many corporates have taken steps to consolidate and reap returns on their investments as the markets mature.

The emphasis throughout the day will be on shared learning and the transfer of ideas in a relaxed and informal environment. Issues to be addressed include:

* The Asian growth engine - What role will Asia play in the global economy over the next 10 years?
* Privatisation, market liberalisation and infrastructure - How will regulatory policies dictate the future business landscape and how can potential (unpredictable) risks be mitigated?
* "Made in China, marketed by India"? Finding continued success in the service and manufacturing sectors - What is the future business model for the region? How will you harness the up-side? What are some of the specific commercial considerations for successful growth?
* The emergence of Asia’s new rising stars- Vietnam, Indonesia, Cambodia, Myanmar… - This session provides a business perspective snapshot, as well reflecting on attitudes to investing in these smaller emerging markets.
* The emergence of North Asia as a region? - How will China's influence pervade over other regional developed markets? Can they increase collaboration to further mutual economic success, or are the political hurdles too tall?
* Human capital battle – Case study sharing on proven HR success stories. How have businesses managed to attract, retain and develop managers who can take advantage of the economic climate and drive business growth?

May 29, 2008 - May 29, 2008,
United States

Key points discussed include:

•Decision factors for previous transactions
•Determining what makes a successful transaction
