- Environmental Bioinorganic Chemistry 2008
-
Jun 15, 2008 - Jun 20, 2008,
Waterville Valley Resort, Waterville Valley, New Hampshire United StatesThis highly interdisciplinary conference is known for rigorous and wide-ranging consideration of the roles of elements traditionally called “inorganic” in living systems at scales from the molecular to the global. EBIC brings together those studying the biotic-inorganic interface across the Periodic Table, mingling chemists, ecologists, geneticists, oceanographers, and computational biologists, among others. Topics range from transport, enzymology, and homeostasis in individual cells and organisms to the environmental processes they experience and influence, as well as the latest techniques enabling observation of these phenomena. This conference is distinct from other metallobiology meetings in having a substantial environmental theme and a broader view of the Periodic Table, regularly including radionuclides, metalloids, the halides, silicon, and non-metal essential nutrients. When possible we mix speakers working at the nanometer-nanosecond scale in the same session with those working at the kilometer-megayear scale, a practice demanding high quality introductory material from each speaker and discussion leader. EBIC provides a forum for leading scientists (many of whom will never have met before) with expertise in the inorganic dimensions of life to identify fundamental cross-cutting themes and unrecognized anomalies and share the latest on acquiring, analyzing, and applying bioinorganic chemical concepts to real world issues from public health to climate change.

- Bioorganic Chemistry 2008
-
Jun 15, 2008 - Jun 20, 2008,
Proctor Academy, Andover, New Hampshire United StatesThe Gordon Research Conference on Bioorganic Chemistry was founded in 1992 to bring together scientists from a range of disciplines to present and discuss cutting-edge research at the interface between chemistry and biology. Both fundamental and applied research relevant to academia and industry are highlighted. To maintain a balance between these areas, the conference is organized by two co-chairs, one from academia and one from industry. The conference emphasizes the presentation of techniques or approaches that are broadly applicable across multiple areas of chemical and biological research. Traditionally, small molecules that probe, modulate, or mimic cellular components or processes as well as studies of biology at the molecular level have been of particular interest.
The meeting in 2008 will continue the tradition of showcasing interdisciplinary research in the areas of bioorganic chemistry, medicinal chemistry, chemical biology, biotechnology, biomaterials, biochemistry, and molecular / cellular biology. All conferees are encouraged to present posters. Poster presenters should submit an abstract with title, authors, affiliation, and address by e-mail to both chairs, Wilfred van der Donk and Paul Richardson. Eight poster presenters will be invited to present short talks. Given the popularity of this meeting, submission of applications by early 2008 is strongly encouraged. - full details

- Phosphorylation & G-Protein Mediated Signaling Networks 2008
-
Jun 15, 2008 - Jun 20, 2008,
University of New England, Biddeford, Maine United StatesNobel Laureates Earl Sutherland, Edwin Krebs, Edmond Fischer and Al Gilman started the Gordon Research Conference on “Phosphorylation and G-Protein Regulated Signaling Networks” in 1970. This conference has been held annually without disruption for the past 37 years. This strong track record establishes the meeting as a premier forum for the discussion of the latest discoveries in signal transduction.
There has been a recent explosion in our knowledge on how the flow of information through intracellular signaling networks regulate normal or aberrant cell growth, metabolic functions, motility, and cell fate decisions, such as survival, death, senescence and differentiation. Indeed, the emerging understanding of the basic mechanism controlling intracellular and cell-to-cell communication is providing an unprecedented opportunity to understand physiological processes at the molecular, cellular, and organismal levels, thereby identifying novel targets for pharmacological intervention of a myriad of diseases. In response to this explosion of information, the 2008 meeting will discuss Signaling Networks in Nutrient Sensing and Metabolism, in Inflammation and Stress, and in Cellular Architecture, with emphasis on their impact on Cancer, Diabetes, Innate Immunity, and Responses to Therapy. In addition, the speakers will discuss Emerging Technologies, including live-cell and intra-vital imaging of signaling events and state-of-the-art genomic and proteomic techniques, enabling Network Modeling and higher-order integration of signal transduction mechanisms.
Besides the scheduled talks, short talks on late breaking news will be included in every evening’s sessions. There will be at least three poster sessions that are essential elements of the conference and to which all attendees are encouraged to contribute. With an intellectually robust program and outstanding speakers, consisting of a mix of junior investigators and international experts, we expect the conferees to interact in an exciting and collegial atmosphere. We are confidant that the 2008 conference will draw active and vitally interested participants. The attendance of this popular conference is limited so early registration is strongly advised. - full details
- Plant Senescence
-
Jun 15, 2008 - Jun 20, 2008,
Mount Holyoke College, South Hadley, Massachusetts United StatesPlants exhibit mitotic and post-mitotic senescence. The senescence processes are unique yet complex developmental programs that are regulated by various internal factors and environmental cues. Distinct from many other developmental processes in plants that involve cell division, cell differentiation, and/or cell expansion, post-mitotic senescence (e.g., leaf senescence and flower senescence) is achieved by a massive operation of programmed cell death and concurrent nutrition recycling. Mitotic senescence also involves unique mechanisms by which plants use to determine the sizes of individual tissues, organs and/or organisms. On the other hand, senescence processes have a tremendous impact on the production, quality and safety of our foods, and on the renewable bioenergy/biomass accumulation. For examples, senescence limits the postharvest longevity of fruits, vegetables and ornamentals during transportation, storage and on shelves. Senescing produces become more susceptible to pathogens (some of which may produce toxins).
Because of the scientific and economic significance, much effort involving multi-disciplinary approaches has been made to decipher the senescence processes in plants and to devise means of manipulating them. During the past few years there has been significant progress in this regard, especially in the molecular, genetic and genomic aspects.
This conference aims to bringing together researchers and students working on various aspects of plant senescence and programmed cell death to review and discuss most recent progresses and frontier. The focus of the conference will be on the regulation of senescence and programmed cell death processes by various internal and environmental factors at molecular, genetic, genomic, physiological, biochemical, cellular, organic, organismal, and ecosystemic levels. Emerging new (bio)technologies for manipulating the senescence processes and programmed cell death will also be discussed. - full details
- Three Dimensional Electron Microscopy 2008
-
Jun 15, 2008 - Jun 20, 2008,
Il Ciocco, Lucca, Toscana ItalyThis conference is the main event in the field of three-dimensional structure determination of biological macromolecules by electron cryo-microscopy. 3DEM is a key technique in structural, molecular and cell biology, and encompasses a wide range of biologically important structures from macromolecular assemblies and viruses, regular helical arrays and monolayer crystals of membrane proteins, to 3D imaging of whole cells or sections by electron tomography. The resolution achieved ranges from molecular in electron tomography to near-atomic in the case of regular arrays. Even with non-crystalline particles a resolution of 3Å, at which accurate molecular models can be built, is now within reach. Electron microscopy holds great promise for technical improvements that will widen its scope I biology even further. Significant advances in image contrast and signal/noise ratio are likely to result from advances in the design of new, sensitive electron detectors and devices such as phase plates and aberration-corrected lenses, which are now becoming available. Added to this, continuous improvements in image processing procedures used to calculate 3D volumes from projection images make it possible to classify and resolve different functional states of macromolecules. The 3DEM Gordon Research Conference has a distinguished record of bringing together pioneers in technology development and world-leading experts in the most advanced biological applications. In response to greatly increased demand, the conference is being held annually, with alternating meetings in New England and Europe. The next 3DEM GRC will be held on 15 - 20 June 2008 in Il Ciocco, Barga, Italy, in an pleasant hillside location in Northern Tuscany, within striking distance of the historic cities of Lucca, Pisa, and Florence. The program offers an attractive combination of lectures, poster sessions, workshops and free interaction time. Attendance will be limited to ~150 participants, early registration is recommended.
