CHINA-2008: Concurrency metHods: Issues aNd Applications
Jun 24, 2008 - Jun 24, 2008,
Xidian University Xian, Shaanxi China

The scope of the workshop is broad. Its goal is to discuss models of concurrency with an emphasis on issues relevant to certain application domains which have led or could lead to the addition of structural enhancements. Here it is worthwhile to remark that often specific issues when formalised as a feature of a certain model turn out to be useful in a different setting for another application. The focus of the workshop will be on qualitative rather than quantitative aspects of concurrent systems.

For the (enhanced) models under discussion, also analysis techniques, extended or even completely new, are to be considered. Through a relatively informal presentation of results and discussion of challenges, future cooperation will be stimulated. The meeting is deliberately not focussed on any particular model of concurrency, issue or application. Fundamental approaches as well as interdisciplinary applications may be discussed.

Gene therapy - Systems and Applications
Jun 24, 2008 - Jun 24, 2008,
BioPark Hertfordshire, Broadwater Road Welwyn Garden City, England, United Kingdom

The ability to achieve therapeutic gain in models of cardiovascular disease is dictated by the choice of vector, the efficiency of gene delivery achieved and the chosen route of delivery of the therapeutic agent.

There are many examples of pre-clinical successes including those relating to myocardial gene delivery, prevention of bypass graft failure and promotion of angiogenesis, although clinical translation of these technologies has thus far met with limited success.

Deficiencies in gene delivery to cells of the cardiovascular system have been recognised as a major limitation for progress in gene therapy. For example, analysis of many adeno-associated virus (AAV) serotypes has revealed the poor transduction of both vascular smooth muscle cells and endothelial cells by many AAV serotypes, including AAV-2 through –8.

For adenovirus (Ad) serotype 5 the expression and/or availability of the primary receptor CAR limits transduction. The tropism of viral vectors can be modified by a variety of techniques including capsid protein mutations, incorporation of targeting peptides into virions, use of targeting antibodies and vector pseudotyping.

We have sought to engineer Ad and AAV vectors that are more efficient and selective for gene delivery to cardiovascular cells, with particular emphasis on endothelial and smooth muscle cells. These studies highlight the potential improvements that can be made to existing viral vectors to improve both the efficiency and selectivity of gene delivery to vascular cells in vitro and in vivo.

Covered Bonds Conference
Jun 24, 2008 - Jun 25, 2008,
The Melia White House Hotel, London, England, United Kingdom

The covered bond market has moved into sharp focus in recent months as it has faced unprecedented turmoil, importantly this has caused people to reappraise their views on it. It is anticipated that covered bonds will become an increasingly important funding tool for banks eager to raise cash, particularly as the securitisation market is effectively shut.

This turn in market fortunes suggests that there will be increased competition from issuers, where each jurisdiction will compete for investors’ attentions in terms of legislation, ratings, and mortgage portfolios. But where does this leave the market? And, what regions and sectors are seen to be the best bet for 2008 onwards?

Timed to react to the arrival of the new UK legislation and the impact this will have on the global market, IIR has brought together industry experts to debate the above issues and more at its inaugural Covered Bonds conference.

E10_C26 24th Symposium on Effects of Radiation on Nuclear Materials and the Nuclear Fuel Cycle
Jun 24, 2008 - Jun 26, 2008,
Sheraton Denver Hotel Denver, Colorado United States

A common consideration for reactor structural elements is to choose materials that enable the highest performance while being tolerant to radiation damage. This goal is shared for all reactor applications spanning light water reactors, breeder (or burner) reactors, reactors for propulsion (naval and space), and fusion machines. The performance and lifetime of operating nuclear reactors are often limited by radiation damage to the structural materials and fuel. These effects have important implications on the existing reactor fleet as well as the development of advanced fission and fusion based systems such as the Global Nuclear Energy Partnership, Generation IV reactors, and ITER.

Irradiation can produce large property and dimensional changes in materials, primarily via one of five radiation damage processes: Radiation-induced hardening and embrittlement, phase instabilities, irradiation creep, volumetric swelling, and helium embrittlement. Experimental and simulation studies of radiation damage provide key insights that enable the design of radiation tolerant alloys. This symposium will provide a forum for recent developments in the field of irradiation effects on structural materials, pressure vessels, and clad materials.

Irradiation damage is also a key factor in nuclear fuel performance throughout the nuclear fuel cycle. Understanding potential interactions between fuel and clad materials is a key consideration for advanced reactors. The influence of radiation on material properties and performance of neutron absorber materials, waste form and package, storage, transport, and disposal system materials requires further study, including processes for measuring these influences to establish confidence in design over significant time periods. This symposium will also provide a forum for recent developments and research in the nuclear fuel cycle, including modeling and analysis of fuel performance and international experience.
