- Second Convention of Asian Psychological Association
-
Jun 27, 2008 - Jun 28, 2008,
The Hilton Hotel, Kuala Lumpur, MalaysiaThe Second Convention will be held in Kuala Lumpur, in 2008. The Convention will continue providing an opportunity to share developments in research and practice in psychology and related fields in Asia. In other words, the mission of the Convention is to continue promoting the science of psychology and to facilitate interaction and communication among Asian psychologists and other psychologists interested in Asian psychology.
It is hoped that the Convention will create a platform for academic cooperation of networking and thus, enhancing the human psychological and social development in the Asian region.
The theme of the Convention is “Building Asian Families and Communities in the 21st Century.” The theme is chosen because the family is essentially significant in an Asian society. Families provide us particularly our children, the sense of belonging, and a unique identity. Families are, or should be, a source of emotional support and comfort, warmth and nurturing, protection and security. Family relationships provide children with a critical sense of being valued and with a vital network of historical linkages and social support. Within every healthy family there is a sense of reciprocity - a giving and taking of love and emphaty by every family member. - full details

- Performance Metrics: 8 Criteria of Effective Performance Management Systems (Webinar)
-
Jun 27, 2008 - Jun 27, 2008,
Developing an effective performance management system is frequently cited as one of the most difficult jobs a government manager can face. Numerous obstacles exist, from obtaining stakeholder input to measuring what truly “matters” rather than what is easy to count. In order to provide the optimum level of service to citizens, government agencies must measure by outcomes and not process.
Many government officials collect data for a myriad of performance measures, but actually knowing how to use the information provided from those measures is the key to an effective performance management framework.
This 90 minute webcast will provide you with a methodology for developing outcome-oriented measures and linking them to specific strategies, outputs and activities - full details
- Pharmacogenetics and Pharmacogenomics: Adverse Drug Reactions
-
Jun 27, 2008 - Jul 2, 2008,
Hotel Eden Roc Sant Feliu de Guixols, Costa Brava SpainAdverse drug reactions are a major problem for healthcare services, the pharmaceutical industry and regulators. This has been highlighted recently with some high-profile drug withdrawals and regulatory decisions. There is an urgent need to develop strategies to reduce the burden of adverse drug reaction – this needs to apply to both drug development (to reduce the rate of attrition) and during clinical use (to reduce patient morbidity, mortality, costs to healthcare, and drug withdrawals). Although there are many factors involved in the causation of adverse drug reactions, and hence in the processes that will be needed to improve drug safety, pharmacogenomics is an important technology that could provide major benefits. The promise of pharmacogenomics in preventing adverse drug reactions has already been witnessed through studies on glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase deficiency and haemolysis associated with antimalarials, TPMT testing and 6-mercaptopurine toxicity and HLA-B*5701 genotyping and abacavir hypersensitivity. The ESF-UB Conference on Pharmacogenomics will concentrate on adverse drug reactions this year, providing an interactive forum for both senior and junior researchers to learn about the latest developments in safety pharmacogenomics.

- EudraVigilance Information Day
-
Jun 27, 2008 - Jun 27, 2008,
EMEA, 7 Westferry, London, England, United KingdomAs of 20 November 2005, electronic reporting is mandatory across the European Economic Area (EEA). This is in accordance with Regulation (EU) No. 726/2004 and Directive 2001/83/EC as amended. Furthermore, for Suspected Unexpected Serious Adverse Reactions (SUSARs) occurring during clinical trials, electronic reporting requirements are defined in the implementing texts of Directive 2001/20/EC. The exchange of Individual Case Safety Reports (ICSRs) based on the standards agreed at the level of the International Conference on Harmonization (ICH) has been widely implemented and paperless submissions to the EMEA and many EU national Competent Authorities is now a reality.
The electronic transmission of ICSRs is a key element in improving the process of adverse reaction reporting in pharmacovigilance. It is not only a major step forward in providing information more rapidly but also in standardizing the way clinical safety data elements are presented, thereby improving the collective ability to evaluate complex data. - full details

- The Idea of America in 19th-Century British Culture, 1776-1914
-
Jun 27, 2008 - Jun 28, 2008,
Institute of English Studies, University of London London, England United KingdomThe meaning of America to those beyond its borders has rarely been the subject of such passionate and global debate as it has been in the past seven years. If we look to the long nineteenth century, however, the idea of America in British culture suggests that there is a lively pre-history of competing and opposed notions of the emergent republic. From the new world of revolution, individual liberty, democracy and freedom to the home of plutocracy and Philistinism; from avatar of the mechanical city to the last hope of utopias in the wilderness, America emerged, and continued to accrete meanings as diverse as its landscape. The conference aims to broaden our understanding of the transatlantic relationship, tracing the history of the ideological contest over the idea of America in the long nineteenth century – a history that has been fundamental to the construction of British political identities since the era of revolutions. The conference programme has been designed to bring all participants into a dialogue concerning the history of three political ideas central to the event: democracy; liberalism; citizenship. It brings together a team of international scholars from the disciplines of the history of ideas, political history, art history, English literature and American studies.
