Geochemistry Of Mineral Deposits
Jun 29, 2008 - Jul 4, 2008,
Il Ciocco, Lucca, Toscana Italy

Mineral resources have always been an essential foundation of human civilization. Current and projected economic growth, especially in China and India, highlight an increasing worldwide need for metals, as reflected by prices that are near historic highs for a wide range of mined commodities. Even with increased recycling and substitution, increasing demand requires that metals and other rare elements will continue to be mined from ore deposits. Such deposits can only be utilized in an environmentally responsible manner, if the ore elements are highly enriched by natural chemical and physical processes. These processes operate over a great range of spatial and temporal scales in the Earth’s interior or at its surface, from the earliest geological records of our planet to the present day.

Auditory System
Jun 29, 2008 - Jul 4, 2008,
Colby-Sawyer College, New London, New Hampshire United States

The major goal of the proposed Gordon Research Conference is to bring together world-leading auditory scientists and students who investigate current key issues in the mammalian auditory system. More than any other sensory system, the auditory system is characterized by a high complexity of parallel upstream and downstream pathways. To understand the biological basis of sound perception, one must study not only the function of a particular auditory circuit but also how it interacts with and is influenced by higher or lower stations in the auditory pathway.

Therefore, strong emphasis is given to cover the auditory system as a whole, from the cochlea to prefrontal cortex and from genetic/molecular mechanisms of cochlear development and function to language and learning disabilities. The informal setting at Gordon Research Conferences will allow researchers who work on different aspects of the auditory system to engage in extensive interactions with the hope to foster the formulation of new concepts and the identification of central issues that need to be addressed in the coming years. The multi-level and interdisciplinary composition of speakers will greatly support new collaborations that go beyond the mere broadening of methods and that otherwise would have not emerged.

Cellular & Molecular Fungal Biology 2008
Jun 29, 2008 - Jul 4, 2008,
Holderness School, Plymouth, New Hampshire United States

The Cellular and Molecular Fungal Biology Conference provides a forum for presentation of the latest advances in fungal research with a particular emphasis on filamentous and pathogenic fungi. This open-registration scientific meeting brings together the leading scientists from academia, government and industry to discuss current research results and future directions at Holderness School, on outstanding venue for scientific interaction. A key objective of the conference is to foster interaction between scientists working on model fungi such as Saccharomyces cerevisiae, Schizosaccharomyces pombe, Neurospora crassa and Aspergillus nidulans and scientists working on less tractable filamentous fungi or fungal pathogens of plants and animals. Similarly, the CMFB conference is a unique venue for fostering discussions among leaders in the fields of medical mycology and phytopathology and those studying fungi that form important symbiotic associations with other organisms (e.g. mycorrhizal, lichen-forming fungi, invertebrate associated fungi etc). This area of dialog is becoming increasingly important as areas of common interest are discussed. For example, the conserved role of signal transduction pathways in the regulation of virulence factors in both plant and animal pathogens has been illustrated by conference presentations in previous meetings. Overall, the CMFB conference provides a unique opportunity to examine the breadth of fungal biology in a small meeting format that encourages in-depth discussion among the attendees.

Research At High Pressure
Jun 29, 2008 - Jul 4, 2008,
University of New England, Biddeford, Maine United States

The Gordon Conference on Research at High Pressure is one of the longest running Gordon Conferences, in part, due to the enthusiastic participants, but due also to the diverse nature of this area of research which spans from planetary interiors to complex small energy scale phenomena such as quantum critical behavior in heavy fermion systems and collective behavior that yields high temperature superconductivity. Chemistry, condensed matter synthesis, and studies of the origins of life have also made dramatic recent advances using this parameter as a tool. All of these areas rely upon coordinated theoretical and experimental efforts which will be highlighted in this conference. Formal presentations and discussions provide a strong backbone for the meeting, but the poster session has historically been the venue for a more free wheeling exchange of information. Participation of graduate students, postdocs, and early career faculty is strongly encouraged and will be highlighted in the Young Investigators session of invited talks that will take place on Monday.

23rd International Symposium on the Organic Chemistry of Sulfur (ISOCS-23)
Jun 29, 2008 - Jul 4, 2008,
Russian Academy of Sciences Moscow Russia

In 1964 Professor Horak and his colleagues invited 80 chemists to the first conference on the organic sulfur chemistry which was held in a castle in Liblice near Prague. This remote venue proved conducive to vigorous discussions which have been a hallmark of these conferences. The success of this first conference led to its repetition biennially. In the early years, the conference was sponsored by the Sulfur Institute, which was established by the sulfur producing companies to promote the uses of elemental sulfur.

The conferences attracted world-wide interest and were convened in Europe until 1996 when the first conference in Asia was held in Tsukuba, Japan. The conference then returned to Europe until 2002 when the first conference in the Western Hemisphere was held in Flagstaff, Arizona.

While the focus of these symposia has always been sulfur chemistry, areas of emphasis have changed. The areas originally emphasized were structure, mechanism and reactive intermediates. Then the emphasis shifted to stereochemistry, hypervalent sulfur and synthetic applications.

Presently the emphasis on the synthetic chemistry remains at the core with mechanism and stereochemistry emphasis still continuing, but there has also been expansion to biochemistry, medicinal chemistry, materials science and environmental issues. In all of these areas sulfur chemistry plays an important and key role. The importance of sulfur chemistry and responsiveness of the symposium to the needs of the participants has propelled this conference into a prestigious international meeting eagerly awaited by the scientific community.

International Symposium on Structure-Properties Relationships in Solid State Materials
Jun 29, 2008 - Jul 3, 2008,
Institut des Matériaux Jean Rouxel Nantes, France

The second International Symposium on Structure-Property Relationships in Solid State Materials will be held in Nantes, France, at the Institut des Matériaux Jean Rouxel (IMN) from Sunday, June 29th to Thursday, July 3rd, 2008. This symposium will follow up the first one organized at Bordeaux in June 2006, which gathered about 100 scientists from different parts of the world. Briefly, the symposium will be an international forum to present and discuss recent research results. The goal of the symposium is to highlight the relationships between specific physical properties of the materials and their structure and/or chemical composition as well as how these properties may be modified by varying the nature of the chemical bonds, the strength of the electron-electron interaction, the concentration of dopants, etc. The meeting will be devoted mainly to structure-property relationships in magnetic, optical, electronic, thermoelectric and functional materials. Within the scope of this symposium, further topics in fuel cell and photovoltaic solar cells will be encouraged. This symposium will provide opportunities for experimental and theoretical solid state chemists, physicists and materials scientists to share their knowledge and expertise.

CoreNet Global Sydney Summit 2008
Jun 29, 2008 - Jul 1, 2008,
Sheraton on the Park, Sydney, NSW, Australia

This is the decade about talent – finding it, getting it, and keeping it. World-wide demographic shifts and immigration patterns are changing the familiar landscape of the workplace, creating cultural and generational patterns that have never existed before. Corporate real estate’s need to understand and respond to these changes is imperative to ensure the organisation’s competitive advantage.

Baby boomers, Gen X, Gen Y – all of the generations are mixing in the workplace, bringing their differing outlooks and expectations with them. Meeting sometimes conflicting generational expectations is new territory for corporate real estate. Forward-thinking corporations are learning to embrace these differences, finding ways not only to attract the newest generation of worker, but to keep their seasoned employees comfortable in the face of rapid change. Leading organisations are bridging the talent gap by encouraging the generations to communicate and collaborate – achieving higher levels of job satisfaction and ensuring the continuity of institutional knowledge.

The CoreNet Global 2008 Summit, Sydney, will examine the impacts of a multi-generational workforce on corporate real estate from the viewpoints of the enterprise, the real estate industry, and the individual.

23rd UIA World Congress of Architecture
Jun 29, 2008 - Jul 3, 2008,
The Lingotto Centre Torino, Italy

This title includes a double meaning. Architecture that transmits and communicates outside, to the society, the sense of its design action, but at the same time takes on the task to collect the best energies and the emerging phenomena expressed by the society. Architecture that is a part of an overall process that wants to face problems that go beyond the tight environments and languages of the profession to face the mankind's true and far-reaching problems.

So, the Congress' complex central theme is subdivided into three great trends, each one being the subject of one day of the works.
