Biocatalysis 2008
Jul 6, 2008 - Jul 11, 2008,
Bryant University Smithfield, Rhode Island United States

Biocatalysis encompasses the use of enzymes or whole cell systems for effecting the conversion of readily available, inexpensive starting materials to high value products. Enzymes frequently display exquisite selectivity, particularly chemo-, enantio- and regioselectivity, making them attractive catalysts for a wide range of chemical transformations. Enzymes also typically operate under mild conditions of pH and temperature leading to the formation of products of high purity. As a result of these advantages, enzymes and whole cells are finding wider application in areas ranging from the production of intermediates for pharmaceuticals, fine chemicals, agrichemicals, novel materials, diagnostics, biofuels and performance chemicals.

The Gordon Research Conference on Biocatalysis brings more than 25 internationally renowned speakers who will review the current state of progress and knowledge in the field of biocatalysis. Leading scientists from both academe and industry will present recent unpublished developments in both the fundamental aspects of the area together with key advances in industrial applications. The topics to be addressed will include:

* directed molecular evolution of enzymes
* enzyme discovery and high-throughput screening
* new types of reaction transformations
* metabolic and pathway engineering
* industrial application of enzymes
* process development and reaction engineering
* enzyme optimization and stabilization

The GRC on Biocatalysis conference also invites presentations in the form of posters, from which 2-3 oral talks will be selected.

Metabolic Basis Of Ecology 2008
Jul 6, 2008 - Jul 11, 2008,
University of New England, Biddeford, Maine United States

Metabolism shapes, evolves in response to, and is shaped by ecology. This conference focuses on how the cellular processes of metabolism (broadly defined) relate to phenomena across many levels of organization. Metabolism determines the rate of exchange of energy and materials with the environment and the rate of allocation of these resources to all components of the life history: maintenance, growth and reproduction. Metabolic rate also relates directly or indirectly to molecular evolution, rates of speciation and extinction, and patterns in species diversity. In this conference we will include physiological, biomechanical, and evolutionary viewpoints; and the invited speakers will present research ranging upwards in physical scale from the molecular level, to single cells, to multicellular organisms, to ecosystems and the entire globe. The overarching goal is to foster new collaborative interactions that will help us to move towards a more complete understanding of the metabolic laws that govern the structure and function of living organisms and the communities and ecosystems in which they reside.

Microbial Stress Response 2008
Jul 6, 2008 - Jul 11, 2008,
Mount Holyoke College, South Hadley, Massachusetts United States

As reflected by its very successful history (since 1994), the Gordon Conference on Microbial Stress Responses attracts a diverse group of speakers covering fundamental aspects of microbial life. In their natural environments, microbes have to appropriately respond to numerous adverse conditions in order to proliferate or at least survive. Subjects covered by the conference range from physiological adaptations in ever-changing or extreme environments to the intricate molecular mechanisms of signal perception and transduction by one- or two-component systems or second messengers and regulatory circuits that operate at the levels of transcription, translation, proteolysis or protein activity. Our sessions will present specific responses and adaptation to heat shock and envelope stress, oxidative stress, radiation, metals, antibiotics, changes in osmolarity and pH as well as general stress responses and stationary phase. Furthermore, complex responses such as bacterial “life-style“ changes, the formation of microbial communities, development, and microbe-host interactions will be covered. In addition, a session will deal with quantitative analysis and in silico modeling of regulatory networks underlying microbial responses. Model organisms as well as specific environmentally relevant or pathogenic microorganisms will be included. The broad range of excellent speakers and topics, together with the intimate and pleasant setting at Mount Holyoke College, will make an ideal venue for scientific exchange and planning of future collaborations.

Proteolytic Enzymes & Their Inhibitors 2008
Jul 6, 2008 - Jul 11, 2008,
Colby-Sawyer College, New London, New Hampshire United States

In the spirit of Gordon Research Conferences the 2008 GRC will present the most recent and innovative research on proteases and their inhibitors, in a multidisciplinary manner. By necessity, the choice of topics is limited only to those areas in which significant advances have recently occurred. This is reflected by placing an emphasis on the regulation of proteolysis, the role of proteases in signaling, proteomics, and imaging which will be major themes of several sessions.

As with past meetings, poster sessions will be held to provide a lively and friendly environment for the presentation of new science, unsuppressed discussion, liquid exchange of ideas, establishing collegial friendships with the more senior researchers in the field, learning new methods, and establishing fruitful collaborations. Therefore, the submission of poster abstracts is a prerequisite for attendance.

The Conference will continue the great tradition of excellent science presented in a relaxed atmosphere. Colby Sawyer provides us with an ideal setting for this meeting. Dormatory, recreational, and lecture hall facilities (including a new conference center) are all, uniformly, excellent. The campus and town are classic New England, with hiking, boating, swimming, fishing and biking all readily accessible.

Radiation Chemistry 2008
Jul 6, 2008 - Jul 11, 2008,
Waterville Valley Resort, Waterville Valley, New Hampshire United States

Radiation Chemistry is chemistry initiated by ionizing radiation: i.e. photons or particles with energy sufficient to create charge pairs and/or free radicals in a medium. The important transients include conduction band electrons and "holes", excitons, ionic and neutral free radicals, highly excited states, and solvated electrons. Effects of radiation span timescales from the energy deposition in femtoseconds, through geminate recombination in picoseconds and nanoseconds, to fast radical chemistry in microseconds and milliseconds, and ultimately to processes like cancer occurring decades later. The radiation sources used to study these processes likewise run from femtosecond lasers to nanosecond accelerators to years of gamma irradiation. As a result the conference has a strong interdisciplinary flavor ranging from fundamental physics to clinical biology. While the conference focuses on fundamental science, application areas highlighted in the present conference will include nuclear power, polymer processing, and extraterrestrial chemistry.

Signal Transduction By Engineered Extracellular Matrices 2008
Jul 6, 2008 - Jul 11, 2008,
Il Ciocco, Lewiston, Maine United States

The cellular microenvironment, by providing a window to understanding cell and tissue function, has captured our attention as we try to unravel the mysteries of development and how these can be applied to tissue repair and regeneration. By defining the stem cell niche, we are poised to engineer more biomimetic tissue constructs. By understanding signal transduction, we are better equipped to design strategies against cancer. By bringing together biologists and bioengineers in both academia and industry, this Gordon Conference seeks to advance our understanding of cell function and how it can be manipulated. This multidisciplinary field demands creativity and participation from scientists in industry and academia working at the interface of biology and engineering.

Tribology 2008
Jul 6, 2008 - Jul 11, 2008,
Colby College, Waterville, Maine United States

The field of tribology is an interdisciplinary science that invokes knowledge and experience over an extremely wide range of size and time scales. Interfaces play a key role in transmitting forces in sliding or rolling contacts and are often the locus of wear. In most cases, observation of these interfaces is limited by the bounding materials and provides challenges for scientists and engineers to understand and interpret the complex interactions in tribological processes. The 2008 Gordon Conference on Tribology's theme, Advancing Interfacial Science & Engineering, provides a venue to examine and understand the physics, mechanics and chemistry of buried interfaces in relative motion. We will be highlighting the most recent advances in instrumentation and simulation to visualize tribological contacts, as well as new approaches to understanding basic principles of contact phenomena. The conference speakers will include experts on fundamental physical and chemical processes, as well as experts in applied engineering mechanics. Essentially all tribology problems involve a combination of each of these areas; the strength of the Tribology Gordon conference is that it provides a unique opportunity to bring together experts in disparate fields to create new approaches for treating the complex problems tribology presents. The conference will be a lively and provocative meeting for discussion and exchange of new ideas between established intellectual leaders in tribology and scientists and engineers new to the field.

    9th European Conference on Research in Chemical Education
    Jul 6, 2008 - Jul 9, 2008,
    Harbiye Military Museum Istanbul Turkey

    Chemistry is commonly regarded as a basic or pure subject. However chemistry has many important applications in various industries and environmental matters and is also one of the few subjects that has its own industry. Chemistry underpins the major role that Chemical and pharmaceutical companies play in the world economy and chemistry is at the basis of many other industrial sectors including food, cosmetics, detergents, plastics, textiles, ceramics, computer hardware, and environmental monitoring.

    Accordingly, it is very important that all educated people, and particularly graduate chemists, have a good training in chemistry and that the fundamental subject specific competences are acquired and nurtured.

    To draw attention to the role of quality in the process of designing, developing and implementing chemistry study programmes, to develop an approach for quality enhancement which involves all elements of the learning chain, to develop a number of tools and identify examples of good practice are some of the objectives of the Research in Chemical Education.

    The 9th European Conference being organized by the Turkish Chemical Society in Istanbul from 6 to 9 July 2008 under the auspices of EuCheMS will provide the ideal occasion to debate Chemical Education issues in a global context and chemists worldwide should not miss this opportunity.
