Fuel Cells 2008

The 2008 Gordon Research Conference on Fuel Cells will focus on the fundamental science of polymer electrolyte fuel cells for automotive, portable, and stationary power applications. Although the landscape is now replete with demonstration units and prototypes for various applications, fundamental limitations still exist in the basic technology that impede ubiquitous implementation. The focus of this conference will be to explore and debate these limitations and potential solutions. Where possible, speakers with differing viewpoints and pathways will be selected for presentation and discussion. Recent understanding of degradation mechanisms and the development of novel materials will be a major focus. Performance limitations from the nano-to-macro scale will also be covered, along with new solutions to diagnostic challenges. Structural design of the catalyst layer and membrane at the nano-scale holds much promise in achieving low cost, high performance robust fuel cell materials and will also be included.

A new feature of the 2008 conference will be the inclusion of speakers for a rapid presentation format session that will open the conference. Interesting, controversial, and novel findings of very recent discovery will be solicited in a brief presentation (3-5 slide) format, allowing broad participation from attendees and early discussion of important emerging issues.

Cardiac Regulatory Mechanisms 2008

The unifying theme of the conference will be "Ca" as a modulator of contractility, electrical properties, and pathological phenotypes. This is an exciting time in cardiac research and we will highlight scientists advancing basic knowledge and also translating findings in molecular and cellular biology to the prevention and treatment of cardiac pathology. We will explore how cardiac myocytes regulate global and local Ca and how these changed are transduced into changes in signaling pathways and gene expression. Cell death and repair will also be considered. A goal will be to bring together talented scientists using different approaches to explore far ranging aspects of cardiac regulation. There will be presentations and discussion of specific molecular mechanisms regulating cardiac function with a balance between functional properties of the heart (rate, rhythm and contractility) and signaling mechanisms that control myocyte growth and hypertrophy.

Modelling is of critical importance for evaluation of proposed mechanisms and to carry out “life prediction”. Continuing advances at both the atomistic and macro-scale offer great possibilities for integrating new mechanistic understanding with experimental validation to explain and predict corrosion processes over orders of magnitude in length-scale and time. The aim of the 2008 Gordon Research Conference is to develop the synergism between advances in mechanistic understanding, experimental methods and modelling in order to enhance our ability to predict and prevent corrosion damage.

High Temperature Materials, Processes & Diagnostics 2008

High temperature phenomena are important during the fabrication, characterization and implementation of a variety of advanced materials. The program for the 2008 meeting will concentrate on advanced materials for energy applications, power and propulsion. Planned sessions include thermoelectric materials, solid oxide fuel cells, nuclear materials, ultrahigh temperature ceramics, interfacial phenomena, and material property determination. Many of the presentations will emphasize the effects of material structure on properties. In addition, thermodynamic and kinetic considerations for material behaviour will also be emphasized. Both experimental and computational research will be presented.

Financial support is available for students and other young researchers. This support will be contingent on the presentation of a poster during one of the poster sessions. Other attendees are also encouraged to present posters on their work.

In Vivo Magnetic Resonance 2008

Magnetic resonance (MR) techniques provide powerful tools for studying living systems, from imaging of anatomy and metabolic function to detection and characterization of disease processes, and on spatial scales from individual cells to whole organs. The field of in vivo MR is dynamic and interdisciplinary, bringing together scientists with backgrounds in physics, chemistry, engineering, biology and medicine. This conference focuses on the latest developments in both methodology and applications, providing a unique venue for exchanging ideas and developing collaborations. Young investigators and students are particularly encouraged to apply. In addition to the invited talks and poster presentations, the Hot Topics presentations - selected from the poster abstracts - provide for inclusion of late-breaking developments. Topics include, but are not limited to: novel approaches for creating, detecting, and localizing the MR signal; applications of in vivo spectroscopy in disease and basic studies of metabolism; physical, chemical and biological mechanisms that affect the MR signal in vivo; development of new agents and approaches for manipulating the MR signal and contrast; functional MRI to study activation, blood flow and metabolism; and cellular function, from metabolism to gene expression to migration.

Membrane Transport Proteins 2008

This Gordon Research Conference (GRC) on Membrane Transport Proteins has been a highly successful GRC that focuses on recent discoveries in a diverse group of ATPases, ion channels and transporters. The Conference places particular emphasis on developing connections, both scientific and collaborative, between investigators who do not normally interact and on bringing young investigators into the transport protein field. The 2008 Conference will be the 6th meeting of this group and will continue to stress the role of transport proteins in both their normal physiologic setting and their role(s) in a wide variety of disease states. The program is fully international, the 2008 meeting will feature 40 investigators (25 from the USA, 15 from Europe and Japan) covering a wide range of topics including: Glucose Transport in the Brain, TRP Channels in Health and Disease, Trafficking of Membrane Transporters, Multiple Drug Resistance and Anti-microbial, Anti-cancer and Anti-epileptic Compounds, Structure of Membrane Transporters, CNS Diseases of Membrane Transporters, Heavy Metal Ion Transport, Membrane Transport and Metabolic Sensing, and Biotechnology: Molecular Sensors. The international scope of this conference is emphasized by the decision at the last meeting to alternate every two years between venues in the US and Europe in an effort to make the conference financially accessible to more investigators, particularly graduate students and post doctoral fellows.

Mutagenesis 2008

The 2008 Mutagenesis Gordon Conference will focus on the molecular mechanisms of mutagenesis that gives rise to genomic instability. In particular, the meeting will enhance our understanding of how mutagenesis occurs in the course of DNA replication and the immune response, and how mutagenesis leads to human genetic disease, cancer, neurodegeneration, and promotes aging. Over the course of four days, morning and evening sessions will focus on: (i) Mutagenesis due to blocked replication and transcription; (ii) Consequences of oxidative stress; (iii) Recombination induced genomic instability; (iv) Physiological mutagenesis in the immune response; (v) Rare human diseases associated with genomic instability, neurodegeneration and premature aging; (vi) Low-fidelity replication and cancer; (vii), Mechanisms of mutagenesis; and (viii) Signaling for repair; a mechanism to avoid excessive mutagenesis.

It is anticipated that the conference will attract a maximum of 150 scientists with diverse interests and experimental approaches and that the informal setting at Magdalen College will foster discussions and the establishment of collaborations that lead to novel scientific discoveries.

Natural Products 2008

The 57th Natural Products Gordon Research Conference will continue a tradition of excellence in a broad range of areas relating to natural products chemistry and isolation, novel synthetic methods, bioorganic and medicinal chemistry. While remaining true to its foundation of organic synthesis of natural products, the speakers in this years' outstanding lineup will deliver lectures in topics as diverse as catalytic synthetic methodology, the use of natural product like molecules as tools to probe and better understand biological systems, and recent advances in drug discovery. Topics of special interest will include the latest advances in catalytic methodology applicable to natural product synthesis, chemical communication and the development of novel approaches toward new therapeutic agents for cancer. Continuing a trend that has held for many years, the conference will have geographically diverse representation and will include speakers from both academic and industrial settings around the world. Consistent with previous meetings, this year's Natural Products GRC will also include a series of poster presentations that will afford an ideal opportunity to exchange of findings and ideas in an informal setting.
