Macromolecular Organization & Cell Function 2008
Jul 27, 2008 - Aug 1, 2008,
Magdalen College, Oxford, England United Kingdom

The Gordon Research Conference on Macromolecular Organization and Cell Function: Cellular Systems Biology has met biannually. This year the co-chairs of the program are Robert S. Balaban from the NIH and Loranne Agius from the University of Newcastle. The conference continues to focus on internal organization of the living cell to provide a systems level understanding of how interactions between specific molecular constituents contribute to basic cell function. Subcellular organization often is transient, as in the dynamic interactions of molecular motors with the cytoskeleton, of macromolecules in signal transduction pathways, or of the enzymic components of metabolic pathways. Many of these interactions depend on the unique conditions and compartmentation that exist within the intact cell that are disturbed or even destroyed using conventional in vitro approaches. Emphasis is placed on interpretation of biochemical and structural data in the light of known intracellular conditions including the spatial distribution of proteins and metabolites. Discussed are studies on macromolecular assemblies, non-invasive imaging, cellular topology of second messenger signaling pathways, and the global analysis of cellular proteins and metabolites. In addition, theoretical modeling, including the development and testing of mechanisms for handling large amounts of bioinformatics data, is a major emphasis of the conference based on the recognition that complex interactions are very difficult to study without computational tools. The conference is traditionally attended by scientists with a wide range of interests and expertise, ranging from experimentalists to theorists interested in sharing views and approaches. There is active cross-disciplinary discussion that has been greatly stimulating and valuable to the participants, and which has also fostered numerous collaborations.

Mechanisms Of Toxicity 2008
Jul 27, 2008 - Aug 1, 2008,
Bates College, Lewiston, Maine United States

There is growing evidence that environmental agents, such as pollutants, pesticides, and natural toxins, contribute to the etiology and pathogenesis of major chronic diseases in the U.S. and worldwide, including cancer, pulmonary disease, cardiovascular disease, and neurodegenerative disorders. In addition, the interaction of these environmental exposures with diet, pharmaceutical agents, genetics, and age, can have detrimental influences on disease incidence and prognosis. Thus, a new frontier in environmental sciences and human health is being defined by research into toxicant-risk factor interactions in chronic disease etiology and pathogenesis. At this Gordon Research Conference research presentations and discussions will focus on the interplay between environmental exposures and disease risk factors on the development and progression of chronic diseases. Abstract submissions for poster presentations are invited in any area of toxicology.

Plasmonics 2008
Jul 27, 2008 - Aug 1, 2008,
Tilton School, Tilton, New Hampshire United States

Since 2001, there has been an explosive growth of scientific interest in the role of plasmons in optical phenomena including guided-wave propagation and imaging at the subwavelength scale, nonlinear spectroscopy and negative index metamaterials. The unusual dispersion properties of metals near the plasmon resonance enables excitation of surface modes and resonant modes in nanostructures that access a very large range of wavevectors over a narrow frequency range, and accordingly, resonant plasmon excitation allows for light localization in ultra-small volumes. This feature constitutes a critical design principle for light localization below the free space wavelength and opens the path to truly nanoscale plasmonic optical devices. This principle, combined with quantitative electromagnetic simulation methods and a broad portfolio of established and emerging nanofabrication methods creates the conditions for dramatic scientific progress and a new class of subwavelength optical components.

Sensory Coding And The Natural Environment 2008
Jul 27, 2008 - Aug 1, 2008,
Il Ciocco, Lucca, Toscana Italy

The scientific theme of the conference is the encoding and processing of complex natural environmental stimuli by biological systems. The conference is intended to bring together neuroscientists and psychologists interested in understanding the representation and use of such information in the brain, with researchers from engineering, physics, mathematics and other quantitative disciplines who are interested in characterizing the structure of natural sensory signals (images, sounds, odors, etc).

Traditionally, neuroscientists and psychologists have used relatively simple, "controlled" stimuli (e.g., sine-wave gratings, pure tones, spots, clicks, taps or vibration to the skin, etc) to probe the response properties of sensory neurons and characterize perceptual abilities. This approach has been successful at determining basic stimulus selectivities of neurons and in elucidating circuit mechanisms. But processing in neural circuits is highly non-linear and adaptive, so circuits can react quite differently to natural stimuli and experiments using artificial stimuli are often of limited usefulness in predicting these responses. Neural circuits are presumably encoding or extracting certain spatio-temporal patterns from the input stream, but one cannot discover the nature of these patterns by simply probing with one element at a time drawn from a limited set. Since the process of evolution has presumably built sensory systems in order to process signals from the natural environment, it seems natural that these signals can provide clues, or even be used as stimuli, in the study of sensory systems.

Solid State Chemistry I
Jul 27, 2008 - Aug 1, 2008,
Colby-Sawyer College, New London, New Hampshire United States

Today, researchers in this field can be found in numerous scientific areas including Materials Science and Engineering, Ceramics, Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, Mineralogy/Geology, and Condensed Matter Physics. The inherently multidisciplinary nature and breadth of solid state chemistry provides the intellectual basis for its continuing vitality. The well-attended Gordon Research Conferences, held in even years in the U.S. and in odd years in Europe, continue the precedent of bringing together researchers from diverse backgrounds, who study a variety of materials types, to discuss the latest advances and challenges in solid state chemistry.

Although the 2008 meeting will feature a broad set of oral and poster presentations on a variety of current topics, one theme that will receive some emphasis is solids for energy conversion and conservation emphasis will also be give to materials synthesis and discovery. This problem broadly impacts not only solid state chemistry research, but cuts across a number of disciplines such as physics, material science and engineering.

Water & Aqueous Solutions 2008
Jul 27, 2008 - Aug 1, 2008,
Holderness School, Plymouth, New Hampshire United States

Water is the spice of life. Without water we would not exist, nor would any form of life. Water occurs in our oceans, in our atmosphere, drives our climate, is underground, and sculpts our landscape. It is essential to our industry and survival as a species. We drink it, wash in it, paint with it, dispose of waste products in it, use it to keep things cool, use it to heat things up, use it to transport huge weights over vast distances. Yet how one single fluid manages to perform so many different functions for us is not fully understood. Even seemingly simple questions like “How are water molecules arranged?” do not have clear cut answers.
