Biointerface Science 2008
Sep 14, 2008 - Sep 19, 2008,
Centre Paul Langevin Maurienne, Rhone Alpes France

The vision of the Biointerface Science GRCs is to bring together recent advances in materials science and molecular/cellular biology with sophisticated surface and interface analysis methods to develop experimental tools and theoretical models to describe bio-interface phenomena with physical concepts and rules that allow predictive, model-driven research, similar to the interfacial understanding that has been successfully developed for semiconductor and catalytic processes. A second, and equally important objective is to accelerate the rate at which new development in biomolecular design and engineering are brought into the domain of physical scientists, and conversely to educate biologists of the precision techniques that are now available to position, manipulate, and interrogate biomolecules at length scales from the single molecule upwards in two-and three dimensions. Together, this intellectual interplay will lead to a new paradigm in the way in which molecules are designed, studied, and exploited for the vast number of biotechnology applications in which "biomolecules meet surfaces".

8th European Space Power Conference
Sep 14, 2008 - Sep 19, 2008,
University of Applied Sciences Konstanz, Baden Wurttemberg Germany

The Eighth European Space Power Conference follows the success of the previous seven conferences (2005 Stresa, 2002 Porto, 1998 Tarragona, 1995 Poitiers, 1993 Graz, 1991 Florence and 1989 Madrid) which have been held on a bi-annual and tri-annual basis. It is a unique forum covering all aspects of electrical power for space applications, from power system architecture to generation and storage, to power conversion and power management.
Indeed, the electrical power subsystem is a core element of any spacecraft and the progress in technology is still giving new challenges and opportunities: Performance improvement has always been the main driver for the power technology development; however the cost reduction requirement for LEO and GEO missions invites the exploration of product standardisation possibilities and modular concepts. In the past years, power generation by advanced Gallium-Arsenide technology has become a baseline solution for satellites, and the next generation of solar cells is expected to bring further improvements in costs and performance. Furthermore, it is clear that a spin-off from space technology into terrestrial applications is ongoing.

By organizing parallel sessions in the afternoons of the conference, we are able to address more (special) topics and we can expand the number of oral presentations. Furthermore it is our pleasure to introduce a prestigious award from the European Federation of Chemical Engineers for the best PhD thesis and book-prizes for the best lecture and the best poster presented by PhD-students.
