- The Future of Quantitative and Functional Lung Imaging
-
Oct 2, 2008 - Oct 4, 2008,
Marriot Conference Center 210 S. Dubuque Street, Iowa City, Iowa United StatesWe are proud to announce the first international summit on the future of quantitative and functional lung imaging, which will be held in Coralville/Iowa City, October 2-4, 2008. This meeting combines a series of meetings held at the University of Pennsylvania as well as the groups that organized the international workshop on pulmonary functional imaging and extends the topic into fields not covered previously.
The role of integrating pulmonary functional imaging and morphological imaging is at a cross roads for clinical practice and pathophysiological study. Thus, a kaleidoscope of imaging modalities have developed, ranging from invasive methods (including bronschoscopy) to techniques using ionizing radiation (CT), nuclear and molecular imaging methods (PET) and magnetic resonance imaging. Furthermore, novel animal models as well as increasing study of normal and diseased human subjects have resulted in renewed interest for clinical applications as well as the study of treatment effects or image-guided therapies. The scientific program will include a multidisciplinary group of plenary speakers as well as a wide array of scientists to aid in the discussion of the broad field now involved in the study of lung function and structure. - full details

- 4th Emerging Europe Energy Summit
-
Oct 2, 2008 - Oct 3, 2008,
Athens Ledra Marriott Hotel, Athens, Attica, Greece 11745The issue of security of energy supply has become a major long-term geopolitical, economic, environmental and social concern for the emerging European countries. In this unstable energy landscape of the twenty-first century, the question is especially how current developments can match this scenario.
In this context, the emerging European countries urgently need to develop an enhanced common approach to the security of energy supplies and look for new means to reduce the energy dependence.
The 4th Emerging Europe Energy Summit will cover all these issues both in terms of a diagnosis approach to the problem and some evidence-based pointers towards solutions.
This year’s edition of the Summit will provide the audience with interactive discussions when speaker and delegates will exchange expert opinions, views and insights on industry happenings, regulations, investments, finance, renewable energy, nuclear energy, transmission and distribution, energy and emissions trading, energy risk and security, grid development and integrity, fuel supplies, oil prices, oil & gas transportation projects, trends and other challenges that the oil & gas and electricity industries are facing today and will continue to face in the next decades. - full details
- Water in Africa
-
Oct 2, 2008 - Oct 3, 2008,
Centro de Estudos Africanos, Faculdade de Letras de Universidade de Porto, Porto, Porto Portugal 4150-564How are water resources being managed in Africa? What are the main challenges concerning access, distribution and allocation of freshwater resources in the continent? What are the driving forces that shape current and future demand for water? What are the solutions being developed by communities, policy-makers, private sector and environmental activists? What are water scientists and international donor organisations contributing?
Pessimists highlight water scarcity and insecurity, water i
inequity and the conflict potential at local and regional levels. They forecast a gloomy future for Africa. Can they be wrong?
Optimists emphasise the potential of improved water management practices, water policy reforms and socially, economically and environmentally sustainable policies. They argue that local adaptive capacities can be enhanced and regional hydropolitical cooperation can be established. Water optimists believe in windows of opportunity to improve water resources management and that Africa's water crises can be addressed. Can they be right?
The Centre of African Studies invites researchers and practitioners to contribute with water management experiences and case-studies from the diverse regions of Africa, and to participate in a wide debate on hydro-pessimism and hydro-optimism in the African context. - full details
- RF Switching: MEMS or Solid State
-
Oct 2, 2008 - Oct 2, 2008,
The IET, Savoy Place, London, England, United KingdomThe RF switching function is an integral part in most of modern RF front-ends, either as a transmit / receive switch or a frequency band selector. Most common are PIN diode and recently pHEMT switches. However there are emerging technologies such as silicon MEMS and CMOS technologies that can rival the performance and cost of the well established GaAs technology.
This seminar will provide a comprehensive overview of the technologies, their capabilities and the affordability and will be of interest to anyone who is involved in RF transceivers and radar modules for civil and military applications. - full details

- The Practice of Oral Proceedings at the EPO
-
Oct 2, 2008 - Oct 3, 2008,
The Raintree Hotel, London, England, United KingdomOral proceedings can occur during any stage of a European application. Each year, oral proceedings are appointed in about half of all opposition cases as well as over two-thirds of the appeal cases. This is in addition to several hundred in examination proceedings. Therefore at some point a European patent attorney will almost certainly have to appear at oral proceedings, either to defend a client's valuable invention or patent, or in an attempt to have patents held by the client's competitors revoked or limited in scope. A Patent Attorney's first experience of oral proceedings at the European Patent Office can be an intimidating experience, and it cannot be assumed that knowledge of their own national system will enable them to represent their clients to optimal effect. In order to defend a client's interests competently, it is vital to be properly prepared, and to know what to expect at this European level. This workshop will give participants an opportunity to increase their knowledge of current practice in the EPO and to develop confidence and skill in preparing for and appearing at oral proceedings at all levels.

- Mobility and Tax Policy: Do Yesterday's Taxes Fit Tomorrow's Economy?
-
Oct 2, 2008 - Oct 3, 2008,
University of Tennessee Knoxville, Tennessee United StatesThe Center for Business and Economic Research at the University of Tennessee will host a conference this October bringing together world-class scholars in accountancy, economics, finance, law, and related fields who share a common interest in the issues that arise from efforts to tax economic activity in the presence of mobility. The growing mobility of capital and labor confronts governments with increasing challenges when relying on traditional tax sources such as personal and corporate income, value-added, and other transaction taxes. Business and individual mobility can encourage inter-jurisdictional competition as governments use tax incentives, tax concessions, or gaps in administration of multi-jurisdiction cartels to attract investments and jobs that do not have the geographic limitations that were present just a few decades ago.

Oct 2, 2008 - Oct 3, 2008,
Sheraton San Diego Hotel & Marina San Diego, California United StatesAs the LED industry continues to grow year after year, there is one issue in the industry that continues to be a major roadblock; a lack of uniformity in the testing and measurements divisions of LEDs companies. There are no standards and no rule books for LEDs manufacturers and end users. There are several groups that have put out guidelines, but to date, no compromise on issues such as what conditions diodes should be tested under. While many groups propose solutions, it takes a combined industry effort to create the standards of this industry, and ensure continued development and consumer acceptance for LEDs.
