- Leadership Development for Physicians in Academic Health Centers
-
Oct 19, 2008 - Oct 31, 2008,
Harvard of Public Health, Kresge Building, Boston, Massachusetts United StatesAcademic health centers in the United States are experiencing major change as a result of the effects of environmental and financial pressures. In addition to the restructuring of the clinical enterprise, academic centers are being challenged to sustain their academic missions and priorities in the face of resource constraints. In order to tackle these challenges, institutions need physicians in administrative positions at all levels who can provide leadership and thoughtful managerial initiatives.
For twenty-five years Harvard has conducted the Program for Chiefs of Clinical Services (PCCS), an intensive two-week executive development program designed specifically for chairs of clinical departments in major teaching hospitals. During that time, chiefs of service in all the major specialties, from institutions in all regions of the United States, have participated in the PCCS Program and rated this unique education program very highly.
To assist academic institutions in meeting the current challenges noted above, in 1997 Harvard launched a new companion program, Leadership Development for Physicians in Academic Health Centers, to serve a wider array of physician leaders. This program has been developed for physicians (who are not chairs of clinical departments) who are interested in attending a rigorous leadership development and management education program.
The Program aims to bring together physicians who are in administrative positions in academic health centers, who are not chairs of clinical departments, and an interdisciplinary faculty for two weeks of intensive and systematic study of some of the critical leadership and management issues which face physicians in administrative positions and academic health centers. - full details

- 3rd Global Congress of Women in Politics and Governance
-
Oct 19, 2008 - Oct 22, 2008,
Dusit Thani Hotel Makati City, Metro Manila, PhilippinesClimate change is the 21st century crisis. According to the United Nations Human Development Report, it is still a preventable crisis. Coping efforts must include: 1) disaster risk reduction; 2) adaptation and 3) mitigation.
Women are most vulnerable to the bad effects of climate change and yet women are absent in the decision-making process, the discourse and the debate on climate change, a global mainstream issue that is affecting the entire world.
Changing and influencing the course of climate change and preparedness thru disaster risk reduction are the two main strategies which women must understand and engage in.
There is an urgent need for political leaders and legislators to commit to creating a gender responsive enabling environment for responding to climate change and preparedness through disaster risk reduction at national and international levels.
It is in this spirit that the Center for Asia Pacific Women in Politics (CAPWIP) in partnership with the United Nations International Strategy for Disaster Risk Reduction (UN/ISDR) is organizing the Third Global Congress of Women in Politics and Governance in October 19-22, 2008. The focus of the Congress is on gender in climate change and disaster risk reduction.
Invited to the Third Global Congress of Women in Politics and Governance are female and male parliamentarians, decision-makers in national government, environment organizations/agencies, youth leaders and media practitioners, funding/donor agencies and organizations. - full details

Oct 19, 2008 - Oct 24, 2008,
Columbus, Ohio United StatesWe solicit papers, posters, videos, artistic works, and contest entries for the IEEE Information Visualization Conference 2008 (IEEE InfoVis). IEEE InfoVis is the primary meeting in the field of information visualization.
Computer-based information visualization centers around helping people explore or explain data through interactive software that exploits the capabilities of the human perceptual system. A key challenge in information visualization is designing a cognitively useful spatial mapping of a dataset that is not inherently spatial and accompanying the mapping by interaction techniques that allow people to intuitively explore the dataset. Information visualization draws on the intellectual history of several traditions, including computer graphics, human-computer interaction, cognitive psychology, semiotics, graphic design, statistical graphics, cartography, and art. The synthesis of relevant ideas from these fields with new methodologies and techniques made possible by interactive computation are critical for helping people keep pace with the torrents of data confronting them. - full details

- Illumination Modeling: Simulation and Perception of Lit and Unlit Objects (IM)
-
Oct 19, 2008 - Oct 23, 2008,
The Rochester Riverside Convention Center, Rochester, New York United StatesThere are an increasing number of applications that require a good understanding of ambient lighting and illumination of objects or scenes to create a desired effect or appearance. Applications such as 3-D virtual environment visualization, architectural lighting, computer animation and automotive lighting are some of the areas that deal with the effect of ambient lighting and a lit model’s appearance. Complimentary to understanding such effects is the need for sources and optical designs to create the desired illumination while understanding human perceptual characteristics.
This topical meeting aims at bringing together communities such as lighting, computer graphics, color technologists, optical designers, light sources and virtual reality towards the common goal of design, production and understanding of ambient lighting and a lit model’s appearance. We would like to encourage submissions in the following areas:
* Simulation of ambient lighting and rendering of lit scenes and objects. Applications in virtual reality and animation.
* Human factors in lighting and lighting perception.
* Aesthetic design for buildings.
* Light sources for architectural and vehicular lighting.
* Optical design for lighting applications and non-imaging optics.
* Material properties of paints and other optical surfaces and volumes. BSDF modeling, measurement and application.
* Color in lighting applications. - full details
