- 6th European Symposium on Aerothermodynamics for Space Vehicles
-
Nov 3, 2008 - Nov 5, 2008,
Palais de Congres, Paris, Ile de France FranceThe rapid development of aerothermodynamics for space vehicles, driven by the need to solve the problems of high-speed flight for advanced launchers including propulsion systems, re-entry vehicles and planetary descent and landing systems, necessitates a regular forum at European level for technical discussion and interaction on this important challenging field. ESA in collaboration with ONERA and CNES, with its co-sponsors DLR, CIRA and CEAS are therefore organizing this sixth European Symposium on Aerothermodynamics for Space Vehicles. The First Symposium took place in May 1991 at ESTEC; the Second Symposium was combined with the 4th European High Velocity Database Workshop and took place in November 1994 at ESTEC. The third and the fourth symposium took place in 1998 and 2001, respectively at ESTEC and at CIRA. The last symposium was held at DLR Cologne in November 2004. The present sixth symposium in 2008 will take place on the premises of ONERA Meudon in the vicinity of Paris and Versailles and will keep the aerodynamic community abreast of the expected developments in aerothermodynamics for the next decade.

- DMACH 2008 Conference
-
Nov 3, 2008 - Nov 6, 2008,
Petra University Amman, JordanCultural heritage research and practice is increasingly aided by and dependent on digital media. In the last decade or so, digital media have become the choice media for the documentation, management, and communication of cultural heritage. However, it is often argued that digital media tend to create and compile value-free content and thus are unable to communicate cultural and symbolic meanings. Digital media, as any other medium, tend to amplify or reduce the cultural phenomena as a result of their constraints and limitations. Thus the issue of using digital media for cultural heritage is by no means a simple one and must be examined from different angles. The aim of DMACH2008 is to explore the opportunities and challenges of using digital media in the research, preservation, management, interpretation, and representation of cultural heritage.

-
Nov 3, 2008 - Nov 5, 2008,
Rotterdam, South Holland NetherlandsThe European Network for Child Friendly Cities and the Child in the City Foundation are co-operating on this conference, which focuses on two themes. The conference will discuss the theme of child-friendliness on a small scale: the Child Friendly Communities. Children can have an overview of this scale, which moreover enables a co-operation of a variety of partners which is easier to realise than on the level of the municipality. The second theme will offer an answer to a question that has been asked several times at the former conferences: when can a city be called a child friendly city, or what are the Points of Reference for Child Friendly Cities.
We expect more than 300 representatives of municipalities, researchers and other stakeholders from all over Europe to contribute to the exchanges of practices and knowledge. As in the past, the conference will have a multidisciplinary character, bringing together politicians, urban planners, community workers, youth workers, civil servants and everyone who’s involved in making communities more child friendly. To enrich the attendee experience, the Program Committee selects speakers from cities with exciting experiences on the field and includes internationally renowned scientists. The 4th Child in the City Conference is expected to be another successful educational event and an opportunity to exchange the latest information with scientists and practitioners. - full details

- Insuring Future Climate Change
-
Nov 3, 2008 - Nov 4, 2008,
Gjensidige Oslo NorwayThis conference brings together researchers, stakeholders and decision-makers from insurance, science and politics in order to stimulate discussion and dialog. The aim is to promote pro-active actions for reducing risks before serious impacts of climate change are upon us.
The conference sessions intend to present theoretical knowledge as well as practical tools on calculating climate risk, mapping risk geographically, possibilities and limits of adaptation, and communicating risk. Collaboration between the public and private sector is discussed as well as a philosophical approach to the issue of who should bear responsibility for adaptation and damage reduction. Case-studies from different regions in Europe and the most central types of climate extremes are presented to round off each topical session. The studies present experience on mapping, prediction and damage reduction of climate events such as storms, flooding, sea-level rise and snow-blizzards.
While society as a whole must bear the cost of climate change - in the form of higher insurance premiums or infrastructure repairs financed by taxes, knowledge on the effects of climate change on the business and climate protection can bring huge economic opportunities. Thanks to new technologies, increased energy efficiency, and new products within risk management, it is possible to be prepared by acting and planning today. - full details
