The Philosophy of Adam Smith Conference
Jan 6, 2009 - Jan 8, 2009,
Baliol College Oxford, England United Kingdom

Although Adam Smith is better known now for his economics, in his own time it was his first book, The Theory of Moral Sentiments (1759), that established his reputation. Just as scholarly work on Smith has challenged the free market appropriation of Smith's Wealth of Nations, so it has also come to appreciate the importance of Smith's moral philosophy for his overall intellectual project.

Angiogenesis and Lymphangiogenesis in Cancer
Jan 6, 2009 - Jan 11, 2009,
Big Sky Resort Big Sky, Montana United States

A concrete understanding of the mechanisms that regulate tumor angiogenesis has led to advances in the clinic; however multiple challenges remain. First, not all tumors or tumor types respond equally well to anti-VEGF therapy. And for those that do, many, if not all, eventually become refractory to anti-VEGF therapies. It is essential to understand the various factors that lead to the development and function of the neovascular network in tumors in order to improve therapies and identify predictive markers. In addition, understanding basic mechanisms of angiogenesis will lead to insights into other diseases where neovascularization is an important factor in the progression or resolution of the pathology. This symposium will provide a forum to discuss the current status of anti-angiogenic therapy, new insights into the molecular and morphologic abnormalities of the tumor vascular network, methods to investigate mechanisms of angiogenesis, the relationship of the tumor microenvironment to vascular and tumor stem cells, and elucidation of recently discovered mediators of angiogenesis.

Ayahuasca Healing Retreat (Introductiory Program)
Jan 6, 2009 - Jan 13, 2009,
Ithacare, Bahia Brazil

The Ayahuasca Healing Retreats have been created by Silvia Polivoy, a licensed clinical psychologist, who, having worked and trained with Peruvian and Mexican shamans, recognized the immense contemporary worth of these ancient traditions.

The central tenet of her retreats is self-empowerment. Participants focus on how to access hidden resources of inner strenght and personal power that stem from the shaman that is within us all: the higher self. The experience of the sessions can be challenging for some. Much of our sometimes cumbersome psychological armament can be – for the time of the session – dismantled. What Silvia recognized is that, if she could create a safe framework of loving encouragement, retreat participants would be able to better direct their own healing and self-exploration as well as do much more powerful inner work.

The retreats are held in our private eco center inside of 39 acres of lush preserved area. It is located 7 miles from Itacare on the cost of Bahia. Our location is only minutes away from beautiful coastal beaches, which back onto the Mata Atlantica, the second largest rainforest in the country.

Silvia and her changing team of facilitators and visiting teachers, bring ample knowledge of their particular fields, humour, and great reserves of intuitive kindness into the mix, leaving participants with radiant smiles and a renewed sense of self after one of these retreats.
