Emerging Tumor Suppressors
Jan 25, 2009 - Jan 30, 2009,
Sagebrush Inn and Conference Center Taos, New Mexico United States

This symposium will cover the recent exciting discoveries on tumor suppressors and related areas. The sessions, topics, and speakers have been chosen to reflect the fact that cancers arise from multiple defects in tumor suppressor pathways/networks. The pathways to be discussed at the meeting are among those most commonly altered in cancer cells, and where exciting results have emerged over the past few years and where considerable progress is expected. The talks will offer exciting new results from the speakers’ laboratories and it is expected that common biological themes will emerge in many sessions, such as the pleiotropic effects of tumor suppressor gene defects on multiple different cell phenotypes, and the likely cross-talk between tumor suppressor gene pathways that currently appear to be functionally distinct.

Omics Meets Cell Biology
Jan 25, 2009 - Jan 30, 2009,
Beaver Run Resort Breckenridge, Colorado United States

Apart from deciphering the genomic sequences of hundreds of species, the (human) genome project has catalyzed a wave of technological innovation that is unprecedented in the life sciences. Among its most important products are a number of assays or technologies for the quantitative, global and high throughput analysis of the genome, the molecules derived from the genome and their interactions. These technologies are colloquially described as “OMICS” technologies. The data sets generated by OMICS technologies represent a unique resource for biologists. They have also raised a number of challenging technical and conceptual issues, the solutions to which will ultimately determine the impact of OMICS technologies on biology. These include the error models, completeness and reproducibility of large scale data sets, the question whether and how different data types obtained from the same systems can be integrated and, most importantly, whether validated new biological knowledge has been or will be created either from OMICS data alone or by strategies that combine OMICS and traditional approaches. This conference will bring together the leading experts representing OMICS technologies and leading cell biologists to discuss these issues.

Tuberculosis: Biology, Pathology and Therapy
Jan 25, 2009 - Jan 30, 2009,
Keystone Resort Keystone, Colorado United States

Tuberculosis kills 2 million people per year worldwide. Although great strides have been made in the past decade in understanding Mycobacterium tuberculosis, the complexity of the disease necessitates a multi-pronged approach. Translating insights related to host-pathogen interplay and bacterial physiology into treatments is complex, requiring academics and industrial scientists to come together in new and creative ways. In humans the infection is persistent and chronic, yet reactivates into fulminating progressive disease. This, and the shortage of appropriate animal models, form major obstacles to identifying factors that determine disease progression and the extensive pathology associated with transmission. This meeting will focus on basic mechanisms of pathogenesis of Mycobacterium tuberculosis, and how the balance of control of infection within the granuloma is influenced by host and bacterial factors. We will also focus on translating basic mechanistic findings to the development of therapies, and a workshop highlighting academic-industrial partnerships is planned.

Molecular Approaches For Emergent / Re-Emergent Tropical Diseases
Jan 25, 2009 - Jan 30, 2009,
Hotel Galvez Galveston, Texas United States

With widespread environmental changes and population migrations, numerous infectious diseases have emerged and re-emerged in different areas of the world. While medically diverse, Emergent / Re-Emergent Tropical Diseases (ETDs) share features that allow them to persist under conditions of poverty, resulting in clustering and overlap of different diseases. Many of these diseases are zoonotic and transmitted to man directly from animals or via vectors, and disease distribution reflects the dynamics of human populations, host reservoirs and pathogen vectors. In addition to many others, the so called "exotic" agents are a continuous major threat to public health systems due to limited experience in case management and lack of appropriate resources.

In this Gordon Research Conference we will focus on two main aspects regarding the ETDs: the first one "Molecular and Cell Biology of Host-Pathogen Interactions" will be devoted to basic research involving different aspects of invertebrate / vertebrate host interaction, such as invasion, homing/latency and transmission. The second segment will focus on "Strategies for Disease Control" as they relate to possible testing in the field.

The intent is to discuss in an integrated manner interventions at the level of both invertebrate and vertebrate hosts. We believe that a scientific program that promotes discussions from basic to applied questions of pathogen-host interaction and disease control will be very informative and productive. We also hope that parallel discussions involving invertebrate and vertebrate hosts will prove fruitful in generating new insights on fundamental questions as well as open new directions towards applications and at the same time, create a multidisciplinary framework for scientists interested in ETDs.

Metals In Biology
Jan 25, 2009 - Jan 30, 2009,
Four Points Sheraton / Holiday Inn Express Ventura, California United States

Metals play key roles in maintaining life. You will have a hard time finding one important process within the living cell that does NOT depend on a metal ion in the context of either function or structure. Metals are located at the heart of sophisticated molecular machines, ready to conserve energy, ready to cope with toxic gases, or ready to send out signals to trigger or terminate important reactions. The highly interdisciplinary Metals in Biology Gordon Conference (MIB) is one of the longest-running in the GRC family. It provides a forum for leading researchers with expertise that spans from physical techniques and synthetic chemistry through biology and biomedicine to meet and discuss topics of common interest. Fostering new collaborations and friendships between scientists with a complementary skills and goals is a hallmark of this conference. Accordingly, it is our goal to diversify our meeting to the largest extent possible. For example, we will endeavour to mix established scientists and those who are making their first breakthroughs in the same session whenever feasible. In addition, extensive poster sessions will be held to facilitate discussions in an open atmopshere, thus providing excellent opportunities to present your latest results. The consistent oversubscription of MIB prompted our community to start the first Graduate Research Seminar (in Bioinorganic Chemistry) in 1996. This meeting typically draws graduate and postdoctoral students from a diverse array of laboratories studying metals in biology. It overlaps with MIB for one oral and one poster session to allow students to meet and interact with established scientists in their areas of research. We specifically encourage graduate students and postdocs to take advantage of these unique educational opportunities and to participate in either the MIB conference or the Bioinorganic Chemistry GRS.

Cancer Genetics & Epigenetics 2009
Jan 25, 2009 - Jan 30, 2009,
Ventura Beach Marriott Ventura, California United States

Cancer is fundamentally a disease of abnormal gene/pathway function caused by specific alterations in the genome. The nature of these alterations – genetic and epigenetic, and the mechanisms that lead to such genomic changes is the focus of this GRC series. The field has seen a dramatic shift in the past decade from a pure genetic explanation for cancer to a mixed genetic/epigenetic explanation that has important implications for understanding disease causation, deciphering the pathways affected and devising new strategies for prevention and treatment of cancer. Sessions in the meeting will be devoted to recent developments with particular emphasis on whole genome approaches that are revolutionizing the field. Sessions will discuss genomic alterations (mutations, chromosomal changes) and epigenomic alterations (DNA methylation, histone modifications) in cancer in humans as well as in-vitro or animal models. Interactions between genetic and epigenetic changes will also be highlighted, as will clinical implications of the findings, with emphasis on drugs that target genetic or epigenetic changes.

ASLO Aquatic Sciences Meeting 2009
Jan 25, 2009 - Jan 30, 2009,
Center de Congres Acropolis Nice, France

With this third international ASLO Meeting in Europe and the only ASLO meeting in 2009, the picturesque coasts and towns of Southern France invite you to share and exchange your scientific findings and viewpoints with colleagues from all over the world with a touch of Mediterranean life style by setting the premises for lively discussions in a friendly and warm atmosphere. Mediterranean tradition includes a long enough lunchtime break to visit one of the lovely restaurants in the medieval quarters of Nice, only 5 minutes away, or to take a break at the nearby beach (sorry, sunbathing is not guaranteed in January).

We are intentionally not focusing this meeting on a specific theme and rather offer a large variety of session to everybody's taste and interest using a bottom up approach. Reflecting Europe's large variety of different cultures that have to cope with each other in a permanent exchange of different ideas, we introduce a new kind of plenary lecture in this conference. topic of the day will be covered by two speakers with either controversial or complementary viewpoints in order to solicit a lively discussion among the participants in the following sessions. We also encourage a transdisciplinary approach with natural and social scientists in one of the five keynote topics ("Future water shortage and sustainable water management: their implications for aquatic ecosystems").
