Review of the event

The first edition of the Healthcare Expansion Congress in Africa was well received by all 80 attendees. The intimate format and networking opportunities proved to be most successful for all parties concerned.

The presentation by Dr. Aslam Dasoo, Chief Executive of Health Equity Partners on an ‘overview of the health sector’ provided the audience with an insightful impression of the industry on the continent. Prof. Stuart Whittaker, CEO of the Council for Health Services Accreditation of South Africa presentation on ‘patient safety’ pointed out imperative issues facing hospitals and health centres in Africa. While controversial panel discussions on combating Africa’s epidemics with Dr. Kgosi Letlape, President of the African Medical Association, John Heinrich the CEO of SANTA and Alexandre Menezes from the International AIDS Vaccine Initiative highlighted important gaps in the African health sector. The healthcare financing panel with Michael Baxter, Country Director from the World Bank, Aida Kimemia, Senior Investment Officer from the International Finance Corporation and Dr. Aslam Dasoo, Chief Executive of Health Equity Partners left one with the significant question of ‘who pays’. These highlights of the congress encouraged vital thinking about the issues addressed.

The business meetings were very successful providing important opportunities to do direct business with vendors and delegates. The gala dinner proved to be most jovial; there was a constant hum of conversation and networking in an absolutely gorgeous venue on the roof of the Westin Grand with a spectacular view of central Cape Town. Speakers, delegates and vendors bonded exceptionally well in the environment making lasting connections for future partnerships.

Numerous journalists attended and will be writing interesting articles about the issues that were raised. Look out in the press for details.
